BURLINGTON, Vt. —
Vermont may be a blue state, but its political leaders expressed reverence and admiration for the late Sen. John McCain.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Patrick Leahy said they did not agree with their Arizona colleague on a range of issues, but had great respect for him.

"He has a temper, and so did I," Sanders recalled, of their heated 2014 closed-door argument over reforming the Veterans' Administration. Sanders was chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee at the time.

It was "loud, very loud," Sanders said, of the exchange, but yet soon afterward the two forged an agreement, for the good of America's veterans.

"He had this streak of independence, this warmness, he was a warm guy, a friendly guy," Sanders said Monday. "And courage, not to mention his history as a war hero. A lot of people felt close to him and were impressed by his life story."
