Question about medical marijuana. My sister lives in a state with medical marijuana.

She is seriously considering talking to her Dr. about a prescription, but she has a question that she's hesitant to ask him. She wonders if the medical grade will get her high.

Does it depend on the product or how it's used?

She can ask her doctor but many in our area aren't prepared to discuss it knowledgeably or don't want to. Better off reading an informative site, like one where doctors who know have input. Some strains used medicinally won't get you high and some will.

There are strains of Cannabis that don't have as much (or any) THC than others. It's the THC that will have a psychotropic effect. The other cannabinoids, including CBD, aren't psychoactive, but they do have medical benefits.

In dispensaries, the only difference between being medical and recreational is the tax you pay. Medical users get a discount.

Also, Hemp, which the 2018 farm bill legalized, is the same plant and genus as "Marijuana" (a racist name for cannabis btw). It is defined as Cannabis having a THC level at or below 0.3%. Recreational cannabis will typically be in the 15%-25% range.

Same plant, different hybrid.

I'm currently growing a strain which is federally legal. It will test out at less than 0.3% THC, but will be 12%-15% CBD. If I put that strain and a controlled one side by side, you couldn't tell the difference. I grow both, it's legal in MA.

As you age you lose a lot of contacts. Supply chains are disrupted.

Marijuana has the THC but she can get CBD hemp and it won't get her high. The THC, to put this as simply as can be, comes in two type, indica and sativa. Indica is mostly used for sleep and nervousness where sativa is more of an energetic sort of thing. There's lots of in between. Once she gets a Rx, she can ask these question from the provider where she goes to make her purchases, they will probably be more helpful.

I need it for severe arthritis, old back surgery, neuralgia, among other things.
To get pain relief I have to have at least some THC. There are strains that
only have 10 to 12% THC that don't get you very high at all but can provide relief.

Yes, and yes. The High is important to me. I have a painful Spinal Disorder. Ask for the strong stuff, it sells the fastest at the dispensary. I no longer use opioids as a result. He will not mind a bit. If he does get a new Dr.

But there are a couple of important caveats. First, she should start out SLOWLY if she isn't accustomed to cannabis. Second, she will get less stoned over time unless she chooses to increase dosage or to buy more potent strains. I'm currently using a sativa hybrid with 28% THC which, if given to someone with little experience might make them uncomfortable if they're not ready for it. I smoke a bud of that stuff every evening, and I get a slight, pleasant buzz. Everybody I know has stories about the first time they smoked premium Northern California cannabis, myself included. I have put pillows and blankets on the floor for visiting first timers more than once.

there are doctors that specialize in writing scripts. You can find them on the internet. Then just check what the state law says what you can use it for. Then see if you have any of them. It will cost you for an appointment. Here it's about $150, for the first and then you have to go back every 2 years to renew. I think you can find them on the weed map site.

Edibles take a long time to kick in, so just take a little and wait at least an hour before taking any more.

In addition to looking at the the level/dosage, you can bring down the high by using some cbd with it, whether by vaping separately or sublingual oil or whatever, because that balances it out somewhat. Also Neil Young’s suggestion of chewing on black peppercorns...

Candies that are half CBD may be an easy way to start. Or a 5mg max thc candy.
