Cannabis
Related: About this forumIf cannabis is getting stronger, why arent cases of schizophrenia rising?
Most people who smoke pot enjoy it, but a smaller proportion experience psychotic-like symptoms, such as feeling suspicious or paranoid. The question that polarises researchers is whether smoking cannabis is associated with a risk of developing psychotic problems, such as schizophrenia, in the long term.
Of course, cannabis use is common, while schizophrenia is relatively rare, affecting less than one per cent of the population. Even if cannabis use were to double the risk, over 98% of cannabis users would not develop schizophrenia. Researchers have to tread carefully in evaluating the evidence and avoiding scaremongering.
Although several studies suggest that cannabis users have a higher risk of developing schizophrenia, one key point remains hotly contested. Since the 1960s, cannabis potency and rates of use have risen in many Western countries with high-potency strains now dominating the market. If cannabis were a cause of psychosis, we would expect that, as this increased, rates of schizophrenia would increase alongside it. But this has not happened.
Still not settled
Although this topic was debated by two eminent British psychiatrists, David Nutt and Robin Murray, in The Guardian and by others in Nature, it remains contested whether a cause-and-effect relationship between smoking cannabis and schizophrenia truly exists.
Perhaps we lack sufficient records of schizophrenia cases to show a robust correlation. It has also been argued that not all effects follow causes. For example, although obesity in the West is increasing and is a known cause of heart disease, the risk of suffering fatal heart disease is going down. The reason for this is a third factor: treatments for heart disease have improved and are saving more lives. If cannabis potency is increasing and rates of schizophrenia are not, a similar third factor may explain this.

(4,429 posts)smoke several blunts a day. My populations tend to be outliers (inner city kids, in trouble). But their ability to self-regulate is.....well, several blunts a day.
I've never seen good research about schizophrenia and drugs - we still don't know what causes schizophrenia - so any correlation is bound to be.......difficult.

(3,113 posts)... it makes me wonder how much of it is addiction to the ritual, not the actual need for more THC or cannabinol. George Carlin said when he cut down/quit smoking marijuana that he found that the ritual of shagging the seeds and stems out and then rolling the joint were as satisfying as the first two or three tokes.
After seeing him say that in one of his stand up shows, I realized that the act of rolling a joint (never a blunt, what a waste) is like rolling your own cigarettes. It is part of the relaxation process.

(4,429 posts)I remember with one girl - in particular - and going through each step of the day. One before school (and so forth).
Crazy. My kids were in quite a bit of trouble (among my many jobs was a juvenile detention program). But they were teens then, so they are young adults now. I wonder what happened to them........

(1,167 posts)I'm no authority or researcher, but I would guess that using cannabis is more than likely to be reported to trigger the early onset of mental health issues like schizophrenia, but it is unlikely that it is the cause.
In other words I would suspect that people with mental health issues may be using cannabis as a form of self medication. So the correlation between people with pre-existing mental health issues and people using cannabis would be seen. I just doubt that the cannabis use is the cause of this specific illness.
It's much more likely that with diseases like schizophrenia people who would eventually suffer from it's effects may be more likely to act in ways that could damage their own health with their own behaviors, such as abusing medications, illegal drugs, alcohol and so on, that may advance the development of the disease. So it's probably not the cannabis use that is the actual cause of these kinds of mental health issues, but it more likely is a contributing factor that may speed up what could have happened eventually.
Everybody's chemistry is pretty unique, and if you add recreational chemistry into that experiment, it is reasonable to assume that you are going to increase your risks for negative affects. That is not the same thing as what these kinds of studies are showing.
I think we haven't seen any evidence that the cannabis is the cause of the outcome.
One might also consider that paranoia to a certain extent, is probably healthy, and that madness is also normal, it's a spectrum for a reason we all are crazy. Normal can only be defined by what is accepted by the majority of your peers. And then on a larger scale what is accepted by your culture and society in general.
Since in many instances using cannabis is illegal, maybe a user should be a little paranoid about breaking the law, the outcome if you caught could have a very negative impact on your life in some circumstances you could, lose you job, be arrested, fined, lose respect and trust of people who have different opinions about your behavior and so on.
It's only when your paranoia doesn't go away or affects you in ways that inhibit your ability to manage your life and relationships that you may want to seek help with it.
Just like any person may become paranoid when that law enforcement officer pulls in behind you driving down the road, even if you may have nothing to fear. Or if you get paranoid when say you walk out to the edge of the grand canyon even though you aren't typically afraid of heights. Paranoia is also a healthy trait that is part of our innate self preservation.

(776 posts)and I never experience paranoia. I used to when I used "street mj" but not with the regulated "legal" version.

(2,678 posts)Just what in the name of all thats good is this legal cannabis you speak of? Im, of course, being sarcastic here. If I can get a drs recommendation, for a mere $250.00, I could get myself a med card. Did I mention theres a shortage of the recommending drs here in Marylands eastern shore? No card =s no cannabis! Ive often heard that cannabis is oh, so easy to find. Well not for this, almost but not quite, senior citizen. No connections also =s no cannabis!

(1,474 posts)trump sounds like he smokes way too much weed. Perhaps the blessing of natural, god-given stupidity.
I have never commented on your posts before, but I love them. I haven't smoked for years, but have many fond memories and some hopes for the future. Still can roll a kick-ass free hand joint, but prefer a bong.

(27,275 posts)those of us who've been using it for decades know this. The prohibition on cannabis has roots in racism and that's a fact not in dispute; it has nothing to do with the joy and well being that are the actual affects of cannabis, not to mention proven medical benefits.
America not only persecuted her own citizens for the use and possession of pot, she also took the scourge of our "war on drugs" to other countries, spreading crime and misery throughout the world. You want to do business with America, you better criminalize your citizens like we do.
Best book I've ever read on this subject, Chasing the Scream. Should be required reading in America.

Not happy with just banning its use here, in America, that sanctimonious prick took it worldwide, via 1961s UN Single Convention on illegal drugs, cannabis being at the top of the list.
