political goal, is that progress is always tied to material gain.
Our lives are not necessarily improved because we have more stuff.

Probably cut down on typhoid, to name just one.

On the other hand, it killed Boston Harbor.

but how many of us actually count them as part of our material possessions?
They have become standard equipment in American homes. It was progress to install them in homes. Electricity the same. Perhaps even the first radios and televisions. But second and third televisions do not improve our lives.
At least not in my opinion.

The period of the Idea of Progress was 1620s to 1780s. It was not about cell phones or multiple TVs.
