How Kaitlyn Chen found her role for the UConn women's basketball team: 'Brings a different element'
Last week in UConn’s rout of Villanova, the Huskies needed someone to help Bueckers and Strong on the scoreboard. Chen fell back to her scoring ways and not only drove into the lane fearlessly but also swished in a couple 3-pointers too, scoring a season-high 17 points. And most recently at Creighton on Saturday, Chen could see UConn’s defense would be key against the Bluejays’ sharp offense, so she sparked major stops with perfectly timed steals. She finished the game with nine points, three assists and two steals.
“(She) just brings a different element to our team,” Bueckers said. “It's hard coming in here as a transfer, trying to find her way. She was a scorer at Princeton, and she facilitates a lot here. But just to do a mixture of both; we want her to be aggressive. We want her to look to score.
“It'll open up everything else, and it'll make teams guard her and guard everybody on the floor. So, for her to continue to keep doing that, that's what we need from her, and what we need to be our best as a team.”
The Huskies have three more Big East games before they face longtime rival Tennessee in Knoxville for the first of two big nonconference tests for the Huskies. UConn also has a date with South Carolina on Feb. 16 in Columbia.
