Big-10 Women's Sports Preview Michigan State

In the past 20 years, Michigan State women’s basketball has found themselves far more often than not in NCAA play. Enter head coach Robyn Fralick, who took over in her first season last year after Suzy Merchant retired. Merchant was very successful at Michigan State, but her teams faltered in her last two seasons.

In her first season at Michigan State, Fralick did well, even as she lost her first game in the Big-10 tournament to Nebraska; the Spartans picked up an NCAA bid where they lost to #8 North Carolina. There is no other way to describe Flalick’s first season as other than a resounding success.

Michigan State (22-9, 12-6 Big10, 4th place) Had an impressive record in 2023, but they did schedule softly and did not defeat any ranked teams that they faced. Really, that’s not a knock on a new coach in her first season - what else are you going to do? That coach Fralick was able to lead the Spartans to a successful season speaks volumes about her future potential.

In 2023-24, the Spartans relied very much on upperclassmen to lead the way. For 2024-25, it will be much the same, with a similar contingent of upper classmen vs. lover classmen.
