Camp Classics. What are yours?

Just saw this campy gem, Night of the Quarter Moon, about miscengenation on You Tube. The courtroom scene has to be seen to be believed. Julie London looks just like Bette Davis's Rosa Moline in Beyond the Forest.

I'll always love this camp classic--Torch Song. As if the raving, ranting, and pouting Crawford does isn't enough, she holds a party at her place and invites only men. Bwah! She was a hoot. And she orders Lobster Newburg and coffee for lunch. She even does an out-of-the-blue blackface stage performance. Ha! How twisted is that?

Are you talking about "The Brother From Another Planet", directed by John Sayles?

How does it meet the definition of "camp"? "Camp", as I've always understood it, generally refers to something cheesey, ridiculous, so-bad-it's-good, with awful acting - the sort of movie that made perfect fodder for Mystery Science Theater.

"The Brother From Another Planet" is none of those things. It's poignant and well-acted, and a compassionate social commentary delivered with sometimes dark humor. Yes, it's low budget, but the cinematography is excellent, and Joe Morton in the lead role as a mute alien delivers a bravura performance through just facial expressions and body language alone.

It is NOT camp, dammit!

23. I have to wonder if you're thinking of an altogether different movie.

"The Brother from Another Planet" bears no relation whatsoever to the blaxploitation genre that I can see. It somewhat resembles "Starman" (which came out later the same year) - although only superficially in that both stories involve an alien who has crash landed on earth and is being pursued by those who mean him harm.

But, maybe you saw something totally different in the movie than I did.

26. dont get me wrong, i didnt miss the point.

it was the silliness of the sets, the simplicity of the costumes.
just had such a deadpan feel. tongue in cheek.

28. No, no, we're cool! As for the sets & costumes, it WAS a very low-budget production.

I loved the humor. I loved how John Sayles and David Strathairn played the alien bounty hunters.

But what has always stood out most about this movie for me is the incredible performance by Joe Morton, and the innocence and kindness of the character he played.

29. yeah it was the budget

and just the funny of john sayles before he was john sayles.
it struck me as finding someones film class movie.
but it was a wonderful story. and well done all in all.
