TV series based on Herman Wouk's two books.

Available on DVD (expensive for the whole set) and on loan from many libraries.

Covers WWII battles, political moves and maneuvers of world leaders, and gives a view of the war through the experiences of both fictitious and real characters.

1988 Kevin Reynolds film based on the William Mastrosimone play "Nanawatai".

A Soviet tank gets lost in the back-country of Afghanistan in 1981, pursued by the Mujahedin. The crewmembers start to turn on one another, leading to a deadly climax.

Most tankers and former tankers agree; it's one of the best tank films ever.

about the resistance to the Nazi occupation of Belarus.

"City of Life and Death" about the Japanese attack on and occupation of Nanking.

Both of these films are far more explicit about the horrors of war than most anything produced in Hollywood. Not even "Saving Private Ryan" comes close, so be forewarned--these are not easy films to watch.
