It is sort of a modern day Frank Capra movie. I think the critics were turned off by it's avoidance

No, it is not, you are right. Best part about WWII movies is the purity of thought.

of modern cynicism. That's not out of place in a WWII movie, imo.

I don't think anyone realized the full magnitude of the atrocities til years and years later. (assuming the movie is set
shortly after war ended?)
