I think they are trying to recoup the losses from their theme parks.

What, complaining about this *one* movie being filmed in that province, versus anywhere in China? The province isn’t the problem - China’s human rights record is. But then...

* Why is this movie being singled out, not Disney itself and a slew of other countries for raking in billions from products manufactured in China?

* Why are people upset over Mulan’s location but not over filming in Texas and Pennsylvania, where the US illegally detains immigrants, particularly separated children, under horrible conditions?

* Why are we giving so much press to Liu Yifei, versus Gene Simmons, John Ratzenberger, Kid Rock, Loretta Lynn, Gary Busey, Antonio Sabato, Dennis Quaid, John Voight, James Woods... (not to mention washed-up idiots like Roseann Barr, Chachi, etc. who’ve already tanked their own careers)? She voiced approval for an extradition policy. They’ve been saying horrific things about how we should be treating Americans and Immigrants to this country for years.

I just see this anti-Milan furor as a bunch of performative BS. It has zero impact on Chinese policy and on US policy toward China. It will not lose Disney any money or cachet. (FFS, Disney has done far worse damage in racist/stereotyping portrayals, with virtually no repercussions.) Meanwhile we’re ignoring actual damaging economic practices and opportunities for boycott right here at home where it might even do some good.
