Related: About this forumI just saw August: Osage County. No redeeming qualities.
Not even the brilliance of Streep or Roberts can make this horrible, hideous, depressing morass worth
seeing.
The only possible positive thing that this pointless movie could engender is the thought that
no matter how troubled your family is, things could be worse.
Pointless. The movie is pointless.

(16,399 posts)However, some movies are clearly made just to get nominations. And the darker and more depressing, the more people generally heap praise on the actors.

comedies are supposed to reign are they not?

(7,699 posts)Nebraska, which I liked but it is rather dark also, and we saw Blue Jasmine too.
Three very dark films in the past week.
Next up was to be Philomena and American Hustle, then Wolf, but my husband says
he's afraid to go to movies I pick out now, LOL. I said I didn't pick them, the Academy did!

(20,594 posts)Most films based on plays I find I don't like. I feel like throwing my popcorn and yelling "SHUT UP AND DO SOMETHING!". But actors like doing them because there's all that juicy dialogue for them to work with. However, films are about telling stories VISUALLY. Dialogue is secondary.
