I like Armie Hammer as an actor, but I have to say I felt he was miscast. Oliver was supposed to be 24 to Elio's 17. While Timothee Chalamet can definitely pass for 17 (maybe even 15), Armie was 30 when they shot the film and looks closer to 34 than 24. I realize 17 is over the age of consent, but their relationship still came off as a bit creepy to me. Your thoughts?

(34,195 posts)Why did they decide to use an older actor,
thus changing the perspective.

(20,671 posts)It isn't a bad movie, but I don't think it's a great one either.
I just read that Shia LaBeouf was originally cast as Oliver and he's the same age as Armie. Shia was the choice of James Ivory who adapted the screenplay and was originally set to direct. Then they gave the directing job to Luca Guadagnino and he wanted Armie. Ivory and Guadagnino are both gay. Is the apparent age difference a problem for me because I'm a straight woman?

(34,195 posts)On the other hand,
I have a brother who married a woman 14 years younger than he,
and they've been together 40+ years.
Today is his 76th birthday.

(20,671 posts)The difference between a 30 year old and a 17 year old is far greater than a 40 year old and a 27 year old.
But my objection was that Armie was miscast. Oliver was 24. They should have hired an actor that looks 24.

(3,044 posts)and didn't see the relationship as creepy at all but rather a coming of age type theme. I felt bad for the boy however "Call Me By Your Name" part two is currently being filmed.

(52,631 posts)While 24 and 29 are kind of similar in this context Arnie did look quite a bit older than 29 to my eye. It ended up looking way more like and adult and a child then the book suggests.
