Related: About this forumAnyone seen: "Inside LLewyn Davis" ? (Coen Brothers Film)
I'd never heard of it before, housemate recommended and lent me her copy to watch.
Setting is the Folk Scene in Greenwich Village - "pre Bob Dylan" - winter of 1961. Main character (Llewyn Davis, performed by Oscar Isaac) is a fictional character, loosely based on Dave Van Ronk (sort of). .
I have mixed feelings about the film, (love the music) and wondered if anyone here on DU was there on the scene at the time, and might have seen this film, what your thoughts are.
Justin Timberlake is in it, John Goodman and a bunch of very talented actors/folk musicians representing actual artists of the time. It might be available on Netflix, dunno for sure released in 2013.
I intend to get the soundtrack, I'd never heard of Oscar Isaac before this film, and I fell instantly in love with his voice, his sound.

(12,179 posts)I liked the music too, and the cat subplot. Acting was terrific. The problem was, Llewyn kept doing such idiotic things, messing up his own life, alienating the very people who were trying to help him. I had no sympathy for him.

(7,321 posts)I did not like his character at all. Just as he was about to come close to redeeming himself as a human being, he say or do something that flipped any endearing feelings I had for him on it's head. Until he sang, that is. But for me it wasn't the character he was playing, it was the actor-musician playing the part. Film opening on him singing "I've been All around this World" (Hang Me) put me in nostalgic zone, that song we sang on road trips when the kids were little. one of their faves.
On the netflix video there's a "behind the scenes" segment with excellent recording sessions for the backdrop of the film, in between all of the backslapping of the production of the film itself. Much more enjoyable to me than the actual film.

(7,321 posts)Interesting, I hadn't even thought of this film since I posted about it. Nice to be reminded of it once again.
Side note: I'm teaching my 6 year old granddaughter the fiddle. She's already very familiar with folk music in general. there's a few fabulous contemporary/indie artists that has come on my radar recently because of the girls. I'm hoping she gets the "bug" and cottons to it.. and carries it on.. but she's got a lot going on in her young life.. at least she'll be exposed.. it'll be up to her of course.
