The production company behind Netflix Incs political thriller House of Cards is taking a step that could have come straight from the shows script: threatening to move filming from Maryland unless lawmakers provide enough tax breaks.
Representatives for a top state lawmaker and Governor Martin OMalley confirmed on Friday that Media Rights Capital had informed them that it was halting production plans until the dispute is resolved.
In a letter that echoes the wrangling seen in the Emmy Award-winning series, the Beverly Hills, California-based company urged the state to pass a law increasing tax credits available for film and television production there.
In the event sufficient incentives do not become available, we will have to break down our stage, sets and offices and set up in another state, the company wrote in the undated letters, which officials received in late January.

(84,711 posts)bring in jobs from inside state because these companies bring in their own crews. The only advantage might be some fast food restaurants or Food Trucks make money and the higher profile restaurants get them at night when they knock off filming...but there's not much help in employment. It does give Tourist Value to say that "Such and Such Hit Series" was filmed in Maryland, NC, GA or SC or elsewhere. But, other than that...what does it really do for states to give such high tax breaks to bring in a few weeks or months film crew to provide jobs that aren't sustainable?

(84,711 posts)It took three episodes of Season 1 to get me involved and I was hooked. And, urged folks in DU's Netflix Group to stay with the first view when viewers there didn't like it after the first episode of Season 1. I posted several times to "stay with it...it gets better ...you will love it."
I managed to get through Season 2's first two Episodes...and have given up.
So...don't know what others think, yet. But, I think they ruined the franchise for S/2 with poor writing, OTT silly sensationalism and lack of logical well thought continuing plot.
I was really disappointed in the kick off episodes of S/2..and am not trying it again.
Of course that might mean it will be a Bigger Hit than Season 1 with everyone else who views it, though. lol's
