Boston Marathon winner Lelisa Desisa gives medal to city

Someone on reddit said they'd like to donate to an Ethiopian charity in his honor, which is such a great idea. I want to get the name of a charity of his choice so that people can donate, if they'd like, as a gesture of gratitude for his act of generosity and kind words. -- OGR

Boston Marathon winner Lelisa Desisa gave his medal to the city of Boston this weekend as a tribute to the victims and families affected by the bombings near the race's finish line.

Desisa was one of the more than 6,400 runners who gathered in the city Sunday for the Boston Athletic Association 10K race.

After finishing, Desisa presented the medal he won on April 15 to Mayor Tom Menino in a ceremony on Boston Common.

"Sports holds the power to unify and connect people all over the world," Desisa told the crowd through a translator. "Sports should never be used as a battleground."
