Elizabeth Warren ruffling feathers early in clubby Senate

A freshman senator is causing a stir. Outspoken and impatient of the upper chamber's clubby atmosphere, this career academic is driven by intellectual self-confidence and a willingness to be abrasive. The result is bipartisan offense and admiration.

Warren clashed last month with Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, over the nomination of Michael Froman to serve as U.S. Trade Representative.

Even though Froman sailed through the Finance Committee, Warren criticized him on the chamber floor after he declined to give her information about trade negotiations.

Froman’s backers say he would have been approved sooner if not for Warren’s opposition. Baucus made his displeasure known after the vote.

“He went up to her after the vote and it looks like they had a pretty heated exchange,” said a source who witnessed the conversation last month. “He looked mad. It looked like she failed to warn him and he called her out on it.”

Elizabeth Warren, hard-liner

Earlier this week at the White House, President Barack Obama tried to use his powers of persuasion on Elizabeth Warren, privately urging the consumer watchdog-turned-Massachusetts senator to back the student loan deal he was reaching with Senate leaders.

It didn’t work.

On Thursday, she went to the Senate floor to attack the plan, saying it would hurt students and benefit big banks. “I think this whole system stinks. We should not go along with any plan that continues to produce profits for the government. It is wrong,” Warren said.

This wasn’t an isolated incident; after nearly seven months in office, Warren has staked out firm ground to the left of the president and Senate Democratic leaders. She has called for prosecuting the actors in the financial meltdown; urged Senate leaders to invoke the “nuclear option” to help confirm Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency she helped create; and was one of just four senators to vote against Obama’s U.S. Trade Representative nominee, demanding more transparency on trade agreements.

For someone elected as a liberal darling after facing opposition for the CFPB job —and whose name is often seen alongside “2016” — Warren’s causing some heartburn for her fellow Democrats.

She's there to get a job done, not to suffer the quicksand of placating the 1%'s protectors.

She comes moderately close to liberalism 40 yrs. ago. If she runs, she needs to tour the South, West, & Mid-West NOW with a populist message so she can define herself before the RW can.

Unfortunately, we'd have to get her past the Democratic Party Bosses and that's going to be hard as hell. The thing is, her support would be REALLY broad. She's so honest and straightforward I think people will cross party lines to vote for her. I'm so hoping for her announcement for 2016. I've worked aggressively for causes/candidates before but I would, literally, put everything I've got to get her elected president.

We need more honest and people serving pols like her!

If the TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) ever starts getting voted on, I vote we get a mass "TP Party" to invade the Capitol with, and those of here know that the "TP" I'm talking about is an abbreviation for something else than it means in TPP. And in the process, tell Max Baucus and Froman to go stuff it!

Warren topped Hillary Clinton in a straw poll of attendees at the Take Back the American Dream conference held last month in Washington. A majority of the attendees also said they wanted to see a female president after 2016.

Warren does not have to worry about chatting up reporters from major newspapers or cable news producers to get attention, as some of her colleagues do. Instead, she often blows by members of the press with the excuse that she’s on her way to a meeting or too busy. This has miffed some reporters, who wonder if she’s already grooming herself for a White House bid.

I certainly hope that she is grooming herself for a White House bid.

Finally -- a Democrat who stands for something besides enriching herself.

"Just go along with the program..."

Really puts it in perspective doesn't it? This is all a game to most of the people in Washington...a game that kills other people. Too bad they don't care about that part. I'm glad a few do.

She's an outspoken advocate for families, described as having "a seemingly visceral loathing of financial services companies." Her husband, Bruce Mann, describes her as "a grandmother who can make grown men cry." Her brother, David Herring, said, "She was tougher than a snake, partner."
