The People’s Fallacy: New Movement Promises To Resurrect Utah’s Theocratic Past

Formed by the LDS, the original People’s Party rallied devout voters behind the LDS priesthood’s chosen candidates in the late 19th century. The result was a de facto theocracy, a fact Lovell freely acknowledged in her letter.

A new political movement promises voters a religious revival in the state of Utah. The Modern People’s Party will, according to organizer Karen Lovell, promote a slate of candidates that will appeal to conservative members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

In a letter published in The Pahvant Post, Lovell asked, “Would you like to have a candidate to support for each office who stands with the Lord on every issue?”

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, this new organization is based on the historical People’s Party. Formed by the LDS, the original People’s Party rallied devout voters behind the LDS priesthood’s chosen candidates in the late 19th century. The result was a de facto theocracy, a fact Lovell freely acknowledged in her letter.

“When Utah was a territory … [LDS] priesthood leaders called people to be candidates for offices in the territorial and local governments, and the Saints sustained these called candidates in church meetings,” Lovell wrote.

She added, “Often a called candidate faced no opposition in the official election, but if there was a rival candidate, most Latter-Day Saints voted for the called candidate, which was usually enough support that the called candidate won the election.”

So which theocracy will dominate US policy: Evangelical Christian or LDS, who many evangels see as a cult? And how involved will Mittens be in Utah's theocratic push considring he's doing his best to be leader of the pack in guiding GOP pres candidates, who are pandering to radical evangls?
