Encounter brings Catholics, Buddhists together

That Becky Van Ness gained new insight into the Buddhist faith through attending Gethsemani Encounters late last month was not surprising.

After all, building bridges between Catholicism and Buddhism is the goal of the series, which brings Buddhist and Catholic monks and nuns together at the Gethsemani Abbey just south of Louisville, Kentucky.

Yet Van Ness, who is not a nun, but directs the Spiritual Direction Program at the St. John’s School of Theology, said she gained a deeper understanding of her own faith as well.

“When you are able to have a dialogue with members of other religions, especially ones very different from your own, it’s so enriching,” said Van Ness of the retreat, which was held May 27-31.

“You not only discover more about them and what they believe. But you get to know your own faith better, too.”

A number of members of the monastic community at both St. John’s and St. Benedict’s have helped organize the events over the years. This year’s retreat marked the fourth in the series, which began in 1996.....
