5 kids injured in basement shooting were hit by birdshot
The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. in the basement of a residence in the 2900 block of N. 28th St. Police said multiple people handled the weapon and it discharged, causing minor injures to five of the people in the room, ages 11 to 17.
The police department's Central Investigations Division is continuing to conduct interviews to determine who possessed the shotgun, as many of those involved have not been forthcoming, Deputy Inspector Michael J. Brunson Sr. said in a news release.
All five who were wounded are expected to recover from their injuries.

(6,641 posts)in a room with a loaded shotgun, and all five are wounded by a discharge is an "accidental shooting?" No problem though -- no adults were harmed in the making of this police "story."

(14,559 posts)that some folks, like me, enjoy the shooting of such. That said, every gun must be stored under lock and key in a secure safe with the key stored far away from the storage place and the ammunition secured under lock and key in another location. No one under the age of 21 should handle a gun without a responsible adult supervising (maybe older as self restraint doesn't kick in for males until mid twenties).
If you feel the need for home security buy into a home security system. If you feel the need to carry a gun with you where ever you go, seek help.
It's just common sense.

(6,057 posts)It sounds like they were hit with pellets rebounding from the basement wall.
It could have been MUCH worse if one of the kids had taken a direct hit. A direct hit with a shotgun (even with "birdshot" at close range is extremely ugly!
The owner of the shotgun is obviously "a responsible gun owner" who didn't secure his shotgun responsibly. The owner of the shotgun needs to become a "former" owner of firearms!
