Blumenthal, Murphy announce the Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act

Hartford, CT - Flanked by advocates and police detectives, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) unveiled new federal legislation on Friday to close loopholes that leave domestic violence victims vulnerable to gun violence following the issuance of a temporary restraining order.

The Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act, co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), would establish consistent, nationwide protections, prohibiting the sale to and possession of guns and ammunition by those subject to a temporary restraining order.

The presence of a gun in domestic violence situations increases the risk of homicide for women by 500 percent. In 2010, of all the women killed by a firearm in the United States, almost two-thirds of them were killed by an intimate partner.

“Victims who seek temporary restraining orders do so under life and death circumstances. Unfortunately, in many instances, our laws fail to adequately protect these victims at the moment they are most vulnerable—when a temporary restraining order has first been issued. The presence of a gun at this highly volatile moment can be catastrophic. My bill, the Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act, would make it a federal crime for those subject to a temporary restraining order to possess a gun. This is common sense legislation that will save lives,” Blumenthal said....

The NRA has been working deligently on re-arming violent felons and domestic violence perpatrators for more than a decade. this attempt at common sense gun regulation will be fought by the NRA and it's pedophile leaders.

You are correct with some caveats, & note that the phony individual rkba interpretation gained traction from a domestic abuse case, emerson; (Dec 2001): U.S. v Emerson was to reverse and remand a lower court ruling that cleared Dr. Timothy Joe Emerson of a federal violation of the 1994 Domestic Violence Act .. civil divorce court restraining order that ended with the finalization of the divorce.

I doubt nra will throw domestic abusers under the bus, eh?
.. but even nra can't find a way to argue guns for violent felons, so they sneak around it. NRA agrees that violent felons - convicted of robbery or aggravated assault or rape or prison released felony murderers - should not have guns, Yay.
But the caveat is that these felons must have been convicted of violent crimes, & plea bargaining down to a lesser crime like simple assault or larceny would generally not disallow those from getting 'gun rights' restored in nra eyes. Non violent felonies like burglary larceny & most property crime & misdemeanors, nra will support people getting guns after prison sentence complete.
NRA supported this restoration of gun rights for non violent felons, unconvicted violent felons, & misdemeanants, in fopa86 = firearm owners protection act of 1986. Actually some I agree with shouldn't be denied guns, like a felon perjurer or petty shoplifter perhaps, & of course frame ups.

.. so on the sly nra has few qualms about many/most violent felons getting guns back, winking & nodding. Then using this or that trumped up reason they go on to blame govt officials & cops for not preventing gun shooters, usually going 'he had a previous criminal record' & blame the system, speaking out the other side of it's hypocritical mouth.

I feel that it is a penance for our state's abysmal support for Joe Lieberman in the past. Thank god he is GONE and we have Chris and Dick who are our stalwarts for change and reform!
