After stalling amid Democratic infighting, landmark gun bill cleared by Assembly committee
TRENTON A state Assembly panel advanced broad and controversial gun control legislation today, less than two weeks after it stalled in another committee amid Democratic infighting.
The sweeping measure (A4182), which would overhaul the way the state issues firearm identification cards and conducts background checks, was approved by the Assembly Budget Committee by a vote of 7-4. It was passed by the full Senate late last month.
The bill would require the encoding of firearms IDs on drivers licenses, create a system for instant background checks and require gun buyers to show they have gone through proof-of-safety training. Its unclear how much the changes will cost.
The legislation has been derided by Second Amendment advocates and gun enthusiasts. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers said today they have reservations about the bill, which was proposed by Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) in the aftermath of the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

(6,641 posts)restoring sanity to the laws governing the responsibility and accountability of owning a lethal weapon. I predict a groundswell of this type of legislation at all levels of local government across the nation.
The NRA-apologists' worst nightmare is just beginning, as the majority of the public begins to breathe a sigh of relief.

(597 posts)many state may not put a seal on you lic but best believe the police cruiser knows once he types in you lic tag if you have a CCW. The putting of handgun permit info on the card in a non visible encrypted machine readable only format to prevent abuse by 3rd party companies
example some bar/club company's card scanners read the encoding an note if the ID has a motorcycle endorsement or CDL. That information is often sold either in aggregate format or in direct attachment to name/address. example i visited a bar in atlanta a year after i got my new address and lic with it on it. about 1 month after that trip I started getting advertisements from motorcycle dealerships shops and accessory companies at my new address (I have not ridden or owned a motorcycle or shopped for parts/accessories in 8 years plus) what was most interesting they were from GA(atlanta area) merchants.
The encoding should not be able to tell a if a person has or does not have the right or ccw until the encrypted token is sent to the state computer over authorized computer system (like state lottery machines or something similar) to the state and the return is a pass/fail.
But the concept is sound and i support it. The police already do this on the back end by combining databases. Make it easy for merchants to be compliant and dont expose people's privacy and no complaints from me.
also keeping an updated prohibited persons list also would be good.
