Something tells me this group is going to be about as heavily trafficked as "Nuclear Free" in E&E.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Robb (a host of the Gun Control Reform Activism group).

Good luck to all you activists though...

It was created by the pro-nuke host of EE.
The apparent purpose was to drive any criticism of nuclear energy out of EE.
As expected, she started banning anti-nukes from EE.

12. This is wrong and I won't read/participate

Clearly, looking at the recent message activity, you may have stopped the debate about nuclear energy.

Creating a 'safe' space for an issue that has nothing to do with minority status or group identity is a bizarre move. In any case, the no-nukes camp were driving home some excellent points and didn't need any special treatment, so your effort seems misplaced.

I still suspect gun control activists will tire of the echo chamber and spend most of their time in the main GC&RKBA forum, though.

We shall see...

What, you expect people to get upset about reactors that aren't being built?

Your comparison just isn't valid.

It's been no secret this would happen, see this post from 2008:
"Reply #13: I hope you realize that's all you'll see: just a few more."

Also, FYI: Nuclear is irrelevant to stopping global warming, as shown in a paper published last year in Proceedings of the National Academies of Science:
"Restricting nuclear power has little effect on the cost of climate policies"

Certainly won't be a gungeon where the gun worshipers preach to the other gun worshipers about how cool guns are. Lots of traffic there, but kind of like gun prayer and I am not a believer.

variance in the range of gun control to keep debate lively, I think. Views can range from "just add background checks to all sales" to "ban them all and seize them" and everything between - views which are far from being an echo-chamber

I don't think most of us have a problem with rational gun owners posting here, but there is a small but vocal group of gun nuts on this site that try to hijack every single discussion of guns with NRA talking points. Most of us know that there is a difference between a gun and a swimming pool and we don't feel we should have to discuss the difference in every damn thread about guns. Rational gun owners who show true concern about the level of gun violence are welcome here, those who continually spew NRA talking points are not.

of this group in the first place from our "pro gun progressives"*. Indeed, there is a monumental whine-fest going on over in NRA-land, aka The Gungeon, right now:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1172114935

Some of the whinier, cry-babyish gems:

"will those of one group be held to a lesser standard or (Sic) smear & invective?"

"So, they will enjoy the same high level of smear & and accusation...when posting in BOTH groups, but a pro-2A person posting in "activism" can be shut out for not "activating?" "

"It would appear they want a safe haven to promulgate their side -- and be protected from anyone who does not share their singular viewpoint -- yet be able to venture over the border using the same slash & burn attacks the jury system seems to have bred, over in this "gun control" group.

It would be nice if there was a little mire (Sic) transparency about this change to 2 gun control groups."

"Now they shouldn't be so well protected here.

Since they have their own group that is a safe haven that changes a few things now. I think the host here should have more freedom to ban those who come here just to shit stir."

"We've both seen the garbage dumped in here, with little chance a "jury" will hide it; I quit alerting some weeks ago. If a proposal is made to formalize a practice to hide/can this enabled & promoted routine of baiting-then-hiding, I'm willing to consider it.

Some may recall when a few yrs. ago I predicted a strategy whereby gun-controllers would garbage-dump this site, then equate the result with an "unprogressive" or "RW" forum, and seek to ban or isolate it. It didn't work completely, but with the "jury" system and their safe-haven status, they are free to resume their "activism," which seems limited to stigmatizing fellow DUers."

"Echo chamber for those who can't stick to the facts and honestly debate the topic"

"be allowed to use SOP as a means to hide comments, but will continue to employ the usual denigration & smear in this gun control group"

"There does appear to be a double standard at work"

"I have been away for a few weeks and came back to find the new group. It sounds like the new group will only repeat anti-gun talking points and allow no contrary discussion"

"My concern is on-going: The persistent campaign if stigmatization and smear may continue unchecked in this group, under current conditions. I think that is an explicit goal for controllers, here and out of DU.

And it is "unwelcoming" and "disruptive," yet core to culture war. Let them have their little fortress. I merely want closer scrutiny of the kind of behavior more closely associated with inquisitors, not liberals.

No one can deny this behavior has been tolerated, even promoted, when it comes to this group.

I also call for a new group title: The Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Let it continue to be an OPEN forum for debate, but not a proving ground for culture war tactics."

"A large chunk of the pro-gun-control side wants to wage a cultural war through restrictive laws designed to deny to the "problem people" the guns that they generally buy"

"I think its telling many anti's here shun open debate on gun control and felt the need to create their little echo chamber. Not very democratic, IMO."

Then, there is a curious little sub-thread where one of the pro-NRA Gungeon regulars attempts to smear a genuine progressive by calling attention to their sign up date and posting count, albeit she does it subtly, with a tactic well-honed with practice during years of doing same all over DU and the support of her fellow Gungeoneers:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1172&pid=115045

Then it's right back to more crying, whining, wailing, and generally childish and juvenile temper tantrums and carrying-on:

"my guess is that we will by locked out within a week"

"it means not wanting their assumptions challenged."

"looks (Sic) like yours were more successful as you got your group while this group was not allowed to expand the SoP."

"This message was hidden by Jury decision. Show"

"basically, they want an echo chamber"

"Ridiculous attempt to stifle an opposing view"

Ohhhh, the humanity!

Whining around on a liberal discussion board about how they just simply can't understand why posting pro-NRA propaganda and talking points day-in and day-out nonstop is such a problem for the vast majority of DU'ers...such a sad, sad tale being told by our "pro gun progressives"**....

before the option became available, so that I wouldn't accidentally fall into the rooster fight by clicking on a thread and naively answering a question asked that showed up in Latest Threads.

TTF takes them off Latest and Greatest index and I never have to do that again. I've seen some Gungeoneers on other forums who are good progressives and Democrats on other issues, but those who are just there and never venture out to support Democrats or any progressive causes can stay 'down there.'

So I'm suggesting we don't bait them into defending their 'honor' over here. We've got work to do and an amazingly busy group for such a new one.

Same as another started up this week, heavily trafficked by members who needed a safe haven to discuss matters of interest.

Just my humble opinion, let 'em stew in the Gungeon crock pot by themselves. Although that was an interesting few posts there, I don't want to see this haven getting bogged down with grade school behavior.

YMMV.
