According to the Pew Research Center, there is broad and consistent support for expanded background checks for gun purchasers amongst Americans. Eighty-five percent of the public including large majorities of both Republicans (79%) and Democrats (88%) favored making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks.

Eighteen states and Washington, D.C., already require a background check for all handgun sales. In these states, 46 percent fewer women are shot to death by their partners, 48 percent fewer on-duty police officers are shot and killed, 48 percent fewer people commit suicide with guns, and there is 48 percent less gun trafficking.
