Just a guess but there could be an issue with some embedded content like images or videos or ads.

Somehow avatars had gotten turned to ‘show’
I normally have them off

When I turned it off, the slash went away. But now I have blank white boxes in place of avatars
😐

Those avatars are hosted on DU, there definitely shouldn't be an issue there.

I'm not sure if linked images from external sites can cause this, but that's not this.

11. DU pages are secure

Whenever the insecure notice comes up, it's usually because someone has linked to off-site content -- like an image -- which is hosted on a unsecure server. As time goes by this is becoming rarer and rarer, but it can still happen.

In a situation where someone has posted an image on DU which is hosted on a unsecure server, your browser would show a warning that the page is not fully secure, because of that single image.

However, I'm not sure that's what's going on here. My browser is not showing this page as unsecure, and turning off the avatars shouldn't make any difference because they are all hosted on DU's secure servers, not on unsecure third-party servers.

Potentially the issue could be something related to your computer's/browser's configuration. It could also be related to the fact that we had to restore the whole site from a backup yesterday -- I would actually be slightly amazed if something *didn't* go a bit screwy after that.

I'll pass this along to Elad to see if he has any thoughts...

I also wonder if it could be my connection ?
Edit: I turned back on avatars, checked that above thread linked, and slash reappeared

Could you try signing in on a phone/tablet, or even a different computer, to see if you get the same result? If pages are showing as unsecure on your main computer but secure on a different device, that would narrow the issue down to your main computer's configuration.

If you check on a phone, try two ways: First, connect through your home wifi network and see if the problem is the same. Then, disconnect from your home wifi network and try visiting DU via a cell connection instead.

If the problem goes away in the first instance, then the issue is likely something to do with your main computer. If the problem continues to occur in the first instance, but goes away in the second instance, then the issue could be your home network's connection to the Internet.

Doing this stuff won't necessarily mean we can quickly fix the issue, but it could certainly help us narrow down what to look for.

I believe we might have a handle on what's causing this -- it's related to the avatars and appears to be at our end, not yours -- and I'm guessing that it was caused when we restored our backup yesterday. Elad is looking into it as we speak, so hopefully it won't be too tough to fix.
