I wanted to find an old post in Video & Multimedia. I didn't see a way to get to that forum much less search it.

I managed to get to the forum with an old link to a post there and was able to scroll through it but not search it.

Then I found the list of retired forums at Latest Discussions»Help & Search way down the page

There appears to be no way to search the retired stuff because the forums don't appear in the search menu. I tried to use the google search for such look ups with limited success

Am I missing something?

1. I don't think you're missing anything...

The Advanced Search feature does allow you to search Retired Forums, but you're right, you can't search individual Retired Forums. You can search all of them at once by selecting "Retired Forums" from the Forums drop-down menu -- which could help you narrow down what you're looking for -- but there's currently no option to search individual retired forums.

I daresay it would be possible to change this so that all the Retired Forums could be searched individually, but I'll be honest, this is not a high priority for us at the moment.

I wanted to be sure there wasn't a keyboard to chair interface problem.

I will miss this function at least twice a year. I'll get back to you in 6 months or so.

3. An advanced search of Retired Forums return no results

It is very quick to do so. My guess it is not searching anything.

I searched for "the" in all posts since January and it popped right back with no results. Less demanding searches also yield no results.
