Air Drop Harassed by Student

I was air drop harassed by a student yesterday during a class. It was not direct sexual harassment, but it was nonetheless harassment and a personal attack. Has anyone dealt with this before and what did you do? I pretty much know that I will not be supported by administration if I decide to do something official about it.

I also am now worried my info/data could be exposed. Apple assured me it can't be but I have read two articles that say it can be.

I advise everyone to turn off air drop and allow no one to air drop you randomly due to proximity etc. I was tricked into this because I assumed the student whose name popped up was sending work images. I usually do this via email. I will now turn air drop off on all my devices.

One problem is there’s no password on Airdrop .

This is Apple’s fault. I believe that Congressional pressure can very largely alleviate the potential problems.

Did you report this to administration? If yes, any response?

Yes, apple needs to warn people to shut this off unless you know and trust the person air dropping you.

Also the student whose name popped up who I directly confronted in class claimed another student next to him had done it who was using a laptop- that student sneered in my face when I asked about it, as if it were a joke of some sort, but admitted he had done this. When I checked the image for info there was almost nothing there.

4. No I have not reported it to anyone

I told the relevant students off in front of the entire class and there was stone silence for the rest of the class afterwards. Unless I was speaking to the students who are good people etc.

I have never been supported in anything when students do things like this except once when a student went crazy, I had to call security and they threw her out of the class when I requested that. By that I mean admin booted her out of the course permanently. By the time security came she had run away. She begged via email to stay in the class which I refused to do.

5. I agree. There are very few reasons to keep Airdrop on.

I have never felt the need to use Airdrop. i use flash drives or WhatsApp among friends.

I am out of the mainstream of life in my overseas land, so I appreciate the awareness that your post brings.

Upon further review, I believe a self-report is in your best interests and of your colleagues and students. Keep it with your attorney

Once upon a time, I heard a pair of allegations. After the second one, I made a quiet report. I was diplomatic as what I heard was a bit vague among other uncertainties. You are on firmer ground than I was.

Let me know if i can advise on other technical matters of Apple products, or school situations.

What is a self report? A close friend who was in biz for years said to report it too but I know this will end up with me not supported, it has happened before. I don’t have a lawyer except for handling my father’s estate and he is impossible to get ahold of now. I have to drop off documents to the court and he has not told me when yet. I am stressed out to the max with everything going on. I hate to see people getting away with this though.

And will do that. I spoke with the students again who tried to apologize later, not because they are truly sorry. It told them it will be reported. I am still not sure what to do here. But the fact they had the nerve to apologize after the fact today when they came to get graded work says it all. I told them you are fakes and what the relevant student did was digital harassment. I told them don’t take anymore of my classes you are not welcome and it is time to grow up etc.

15. Teaching can be so great

But it has largely been ruined for those who try to do it by so many things for many sadly. It is just not worth this level of stress. There is also no support system for teachers in my situation. Two students is a good number. 😀

6. What the heck is an "Air Drop?"

And why would I want or not want one?

At first I thought it was some kind of mime thing, you know like someone pretending to punch you in the face.

It will be a sad day when I have to buy a smart phone...

9. It is when someone

Transmits a file/ photo directly to your apple device. It is very useful for larger files that can’t be emailed etc. But it should only be done yourself or with people you trust completely. If you ever get a device with air drop turn it off. I am not sure if other brands have it. My iphone has saved my life many times and made it possible to communicate with ill family etc.

11. Quick file or photo transfer via Bluetooth between nearby phones or other devices

Actually I do use Airdrop occasionally between my phone and computer.

But not even once with friends. (I am several time zones away from past friends)
