How do you tell if the discussion thread has rules?

I posted in a discussion thread that was linked on the front page of DU and was told they only wanted certain comments in that thread and I was banned from the thread. I was taken aback at the fact no one said I had to have a certain opinion in that thread. Had I known, I certainly would have not had anything to do with it. Just wondering what I missed and how I should have realized it?

1. The discussion groups have little boxes at the top, one of which says "About this group"

and contains info on what is allowed.
and, often, at the top of the discussion thread will be a pinned post with more info on the group rules.

the same with the big forums, which are listed under "main" as shown here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forums

So, you have the forums, and then you have the groups.
Both have info at the top about what is and is not allowed.

Also, in place of "moderators" most groups have hosts, who will be looking at any problem posts.
You can find out about them in the "About this group" tab also.

taking to read about each group will help you get off to a good start and help you feel more comfortable about posting.

The OP didn't have that "about this group" button. I had to use the links at the top to go back to the group first, then the button showed up. Didn't know I was such a novice but such as life. I don't think that closed threads should have OPS show up on the front page though. Rather confusing.
