Related: About this forumThe Biggest Lie You've Been Told About the Oppression Of Muslim Women
Over the weekend, prolific writer Joyce Carol Oates joined the fray of those who characterize Islam as inherently evil or misogynist with a series of rapidly criticized tweets indicting Islam for the rape of women in Egypt. Yet again, Islam is essentialized, demonized, and stereotyped as a violent and misogynistic faith, one from which Muslim women need to be saved. But no matter the rhetoric within which it shrouds itself, make no mistake: this is Islamophobia, a form of racism, and it does nothing to solve the problems of violence against women and patriarchal domination in general, because Islam is not the cause.

(24,508 posts)...exist in every society. They are not more prevalent in Islamic cultures. If a Catholic priest rapes a young boy, does that mean Christianity is the cause? If an atheist rapes someone, is his atheism the cause?

(16,038 posts)that women in countries with Islamic rule are not equal they actually enjoy equal freedom and rights as the men in those societies, eh?

(37,748 posts)I do not think that means what you wishes it did. Try again, and this time, with rational thought...

(16,038 posts)Hmmm...oh...'people with no calender, dredging up 3 year old, long forgotten threads have no life....'...same could be said for 4 month old threads....
I know some hereabouts are just challenged...par for the course and all that....

(37,748 posts)Again, use of rational thought rather than cowering behind petulant implication is requested, regardless of what you may allege to know meaning of, or the irrelevancy of calendar dates...
Par for the course, indeed.

(4,015 posts)Search for "Tahir Groping" ... It's certainly not confined to jihadist nuts. It's more about sexual repression in a society - in which Islam arguably plays a role (which shouldn't be unfamiliar to us, thinking of the past).

(90,392 posts)if it was part of islam for women to not appear alone or not drive wouldn't that apply regardless of where they lived ?

(14,819 posts)Yeah, real enlightened religion. Not that fundamentalist Christianity is much better.

(5,504 posts)I cannot understand the "down playing" of the horrible abuse many women
are subjected to in Middle Eastern countries. Is it because they have different
skin color? I hope not. If the women in Ireland where subjected to this...all
hell would break loose. Something is very fishy about all of this.
Shankapotomus
(4,840 posts)to ask some Muslim women who maintain Islam is not oppressive to them, how they would feel about defending the rights of Western women to drive, to wear a bikini in public, to breast feed in public, etc.. the way Western women interested in women's rights defend their rights to choose an Islamic code of behavior.
Do they think Western women should be compelled by law or religion to be more modest? One may not feel oppressed but still be capable of oppressing others themselves.
