Tim's Tent
Well, it's that time of the evening again... setting in the lawn chair, finishing off the lukewarm remains of supper on the coleman stove... (actually, Occupy Erie has moved indoors for the winter). So I must occupy this virtual tent. All are welcome to chime in, I have extra chairs. What's on your mind tonite,
Myself, the main thing that wowed me was the news of Brietbart passing so soon after his anti-occupy rant. You know you are accomplishing something when the big guns take you seriously enough to worry about you. And apparently he was taking occupy quite seriously.
Since I have to Occupy in a virtual tentfor now, I guess I better tell you what it looks like. In the spirit of my Irish ancestors who managed to be on the right side of history in the civil war, make my tent plain white canvas of the type used by Union reenactors. I want the most bang for my buck against the klan types. Big enough to stand up in, but small enough to rollup and carry. And I tell you in truth I have hiked with real canvas surplus tents long ago. They are not light. Bbut they are nearly indestructable and have soul that the vinyl taffeta does not. Kinda like me. 
I loved last fall talking to other occupiers after events, it was sometimes dead serious and other times absolutely hilarious. We joked around a lot and had fun. I would hate to see this group turn into a dry, lifeless bulliten board of announcements (although we still need them here, but not exclusively!) Or a bunch of cut and pastes of dry ideological differences between competing cliques. The occupy I saw unfold last fall was
alive, had a human face and soul. I would hate to see that change.
I hear the coffee starting to bubble in the pot. (Try to find an old fashioned perky coffe pot lately? Good luck...) Hold your cup out. It's a little strong...

My support of my local Occupy consists of dropping off hot pizza and doughnuts when I can afford to do so, carrying a sign around the block, and other small items as I can afford. I felt bad, they really wanted a perky coffee pot, and I just couldn't find one. They are getting rare. I imagine I could have found one at the wal mart or somewhere in sporting goods, but theirs were tiny. My Mom had one that was pyrex a long time ago with stainless stem. I had to laugh nobody knew how coffee was made before electric outlets.
Nuthin' wrong with being a Hilbilly, Bob. Hill people know how to fend for themselves. (God I love bluegrass.) I remember a musician whose students asked him the difference between Hillbilly and folk music. He answered, "Hillbillies sing louder". 
I will look into that. Occupy Erie didn't set up tents, they stayed in a gazeebo in the park next to city hall. There was electric there during the fall, but the city shut it off for the winter. IMHO the coffee justs tastes better in a perky pot! I wouldn't want a glass one for camping though. All tips for improving the quality of tent life/outdoors that people have learned from the camps to make things easier and more comfortable would be most welcome here. I know people who will use them this spring. Here's a bag of jumbo virtual marshmallows for all of you to toast!

Who were born before the dawn of the internet age keep a few backup non high-tech items around, like perky pots, push mechanical lawn mowers, and toaster ovens! I find the sound of cofee perculating in a perky pot to be cheerful and ccomforting, kind of like a whistling tea pot!
I don't know much about the Occupy scene in England, although I know the movement is international. I would love to visit. I got a bit of the flavor when I lived in a mining town where most of the people were of English, Welsh and Scottish descent. I lived in an old Victorian house.
I suppose journalism is a lot like intelligence work. You need to be aware and connected, you collect information and then analyze it. Best of luck to your friend at Leeds, and I hope you keep the news. Coming for us! Das Vidzhenia! (Sp?)

I was starving in here! Now I must make real hot cocoa - not the instant kind, but the kind made from real raw cocoa powder... Mom had a secret way of making this and it was a rare treat... can't remember what the other ingredients were!

IGot into a screaming match with bluedogs in GD last night over this. It cost me two hidden posts, I had to go get stitches. I believe this bill was aimed squarely at the Occupy movement. I also believe it is the banner of a full fledged police state. Bad idea to get into it on a thread that is already swarmed with the usual Occupy haters. Ouch.

1. Screw Warner Music for taking down the superior CSNY version of "Wooden Ships" (the Woodstock version, silly) from Youtube and everywhere else so they can sell the inferior studio versions and the not-as-good Jefferson Airplane version. They been censoring the Woodstock live recordings in favor of the studio songs, apparently since the very beginning -- the Woodstock double album almost didn't get made. And I have no way to put it on mp3 
yeah I know the old recording sounds better, but you can't post a link to it... and I can't find one anymore.
2. An old hippie friend of mine who used to be overseas told me that they dumped tons of gold bullion off the side of that ship that a prominent South Vietnamese general was trying to smuggle out of the country. The reason? They needed to make way for the entire inventory of the Americans' favorite off-base storekeeper who was fleeing the country, since he sold liquor to every officer and agent in Saigon. Tee he hee!!! Friendship is food and drink and a little something on the side, presumably.

...certainly has the ring of truth to it. Things happened during that time that nobody today would believe. As far as Warner goes, it is true the Woodstock movie was nearly never made. Some hippies took matters into their own hads.
As for the gold, apparently the storekeeper took his inventory to the States and started up an Asian grocery.

Funny thing is, all the parochial people in this country say "well we're a lot better off without those dirty industries" and their implicitly critical of the fact that they were "overpaid and underskilled" union jobs 
But they have NO problem with the same industries doing gangbusters now that they are overseas, and twice as polluting, and paying people much less in China, because it's out of sight, out of mind! They want everyone to compete for a limited pool of technocratic office jobs, meritocracy (which implies a small pool of highly skilled winners and a large pool of losers).

I will gladly pitch a virtual tent here in solidarity! I'm in the high sierra, and the movement is stalled for winter still, not to mention these flaky mountain folk don;t really show up to events all that well....
i have a perc-pot! Total old school corningware model!...got it from a church rummage sale a year ago, for occasions such as this!

...to one my Mom had back in the early 70s! American made to last a lifetime, and the coffe comes out much better than any Mr. Coffee type machine. What a great find, and looks elegant on your table too!
Not to mention the mountain water is probably fantastic, and it is probably like heaven when the clean crisp air fills up with the smell of fresh brewed coffee!

I am in a cold climate also, (Erie Pa.) But due to some early warm weather, our local Occupy is coming back to life. They are a small but intense group.
But how to use an AC coffee pot at a campsite, they laugh? Got an AC/DC inverter in the car| Ha ha ha, scoffers!
yep, mtn air is fine...in the summer. I HATE cold (and that seems to grow with age)
so I don't venture out of my hibernation cave until June or so, lol
the water....yes, best tapwater even in the world! it even comes out as cold as the stream nearby!
