Thus, whether the tapes actually exist or not, is completely irrelevant. It would be hardly strange for rumours of many more tapes to come out, as well as questionable past relations with many things Russian. There is every incentive to keep the pot boiling without actually releasing any evidence.

To simply sow doubt, distrust, and hatred between Americans would seen a major win for Russia.

And - if they wait until after Friday, releasing anything from any credible source (like CIA or any other govt agency) will be next to impossible once Trump is sworn in.
