Why is there all this reliance on national polls this far out?

Have some folk NOT learned their lesson from the past? Polls this far out without either nominee being chosen, no VP being chosen, no 1 on 1 debates having happened. I mean I don't understand it. National polls being used as an electability argument don't work for Trump, Clinton, Sanders, or anyone at this point. The Presidency is won based on the electoral college. This far out its essentially wishful thinking and its a countrywide poll instead of focusing state by state, which is where its won. So I ask again. Why is there all this reliance on national polls?
