Japan passes bill to make cyberbullying a crime punishable by prison

Japan has passed a bill to make cyberbullying a crime punishable by prison. It is a major step forward in the country's efforts to tackle harassment online. The bill proposes that cyberbullying or online insults be punishable with prison terms of up to a year, and monetary penalty of up to $2,200 dollars. Currently, the penalty for such offences is detention for less than 30 days or a fine of less than ¥10,000 yen ($75).
