basic to human nature. Pretty much basic to all life, actually.

Monkeys, bees, lions, and other species are well known to battle, even kill, outsiders. Fear of them is basic to primitive survival. We are not that different and anyone not in our "tribe" is viewed with suspicion.

We're getting better, but not fast enough. We don't even want to recognize the problem.

BTW, remember the opening scene in "Crazy Rich Asians"?
