Discomfort When Sitting in Meditation
I started a new meditation posture about a month ago, and I really had a hard time with it at first. Some muscles would tense up on me and some would start to ache. But I was assured that the posture was safe, and that it might take a little time to get comfortable.
I ended up shortening my sessions somewhat while I adjusted. At first I couldn't sit for more than a few minutes without discomfort, but gradually I got stronger. I then took a day off last week, and then the following day I just sat in a comfortable soft chair to meditate. Tonight I resumed the new posture, and I was able to sit with ease for a half hour. I felt like I could have gone a lot longer. The payoff for persistence has been worth it.
The moral to the story is to hang in there when starting something new like that, and take it easy and slow until you build up some stamina. Also, make sure that what you are doing is widely accepted as being safe. I've heard stories of people having to have knee surgery before due to trying to go too fast or too long in mediation postures. Someone here suggested five minute sessions if you are just starting out with meditation. Gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable.
