The most intense blast of Arctic air in years has taken hold of the D.C. region and wont relent until later this week. Temperatures remained below 32 degrees Monday for the first time this winter and will stay there through at least midday Thursday.
Januarys average temperature is running about 4 degrees below normal, and departures from normal of about 15 to 20 degrees are expected over the next several days.
The worst of the cold will grip the area Wednesday. Thats when high temperatures will reach only the upper teens and low 20s while morning lows hover in the mid-single digits to lower teens. Cold weather advisories are in effect for early Wednesday because of predicted wind chills of zero to minus-5.
While there are no major warm-ups on the immediate horizon, temperatures will moderate some in late January.
