Disneyland says unvaccinated kids not welcome amid measles outbreak

Disneyland is urging the parents of children who are not vaccinated against measles to stay away from the theme park because of the risk from California’s outbreak of the disease.

Park officials issued the warning on Wednesday after state health officials said newborns, who cannot be vaccinated because they are under six months of age, should be kept away from the resort.

The recommendations fuelled a backlash against an anti-vaccination movement facing blame for the outbreak, which has infected at least 70 people in recent weeks, most in California.

Gil Chavez of the California Department of Public Health urged the state’s unvaccinated residents to get inoculated to control the disease’s spread. “This is not a trivial illness,” she said.

3. A prudent measure, but it assumes parents will act rationally

I suspect that parents who are stupid enough not to get their kids vaccinated will be stupid enough to ignore this directive. Of course the outcome will be that their kids get sick and continue spreading the disease.

5. Correct, that's a significant assumption.

Especially since plans to visit theme parks - especially ones like Disney - are often made months in advance and can't simply be rescheduled.

.... or even get all huffy and deliberately go just for spite. "No one's gonna tell ME what to do with my child!" (It's all about them, not their unfortunate children)

9. Pfft. I read on the Internet that measles can be instantly cured with coconut water

or some other homeopathic bullshit. So clearly it's no threat. Sure, I won't trust my doctor on vaccines, but a random website says what I want to be true, so it must be true.

8. They may be surprised to find that vaccinated children can get it too. And spread it.
