An Atheist and a Baptist Minister Are Promoting (Actual) Religious Freedom in FL
By Hemant Mehta, January 17, 2019
Wednesday was National Religious Freedom Day, and next month, an atheist and a Baptist minister are coming together to host a Summit on Religious Freedom in Orlando.
To promote the event, Pastor Danny de Armas of First Baptist Orlando and David Williamson of the Central Florida Freethought Community took part in a discussion for the Orlando Sentinel in which they discussed church/state separation, a recent bill to require Bible classes in Florida schools, and whether they can find common ground. If all Im doing is fighting for religious freedom to practice my faith, its just authority that Im looking for, not freedom, said Danny de Armas, First Baptist Orlando senior associate pastor. If I really believe in religious liberty, Im advocating for somebody to be able to practice their faith who believe differently than me.

(12,132 posts)once a week called Friends Talking Faith. I catch some of it on the way home from work sometimes - it's only a half hour. It's a local imam, preacher and rabbi and, while I don't believe in any of their religions, I think they do try very hard to counter the right-wing conservative brand of religion. They seem to be pretty openly liberal. They've had some interesting guests on and I am pretty sure that one of them was the Florida Freethought guy.
But even though they probably agree with me on most political things, I still find myself occasionally hollering at the radio about some outlandish religious thing they are talking about. It's fun. They can't hear me and the people in surrounding cars just think I'm mad at bad drivers.
I'll listen tomorrow and see if they talk about this.
