The Roy Moore episode

The race to fill Jeff Sessions' US Senate seat in Alabama is becoming more than just Dems vs Reps. It's god vs the devil.

According to Moore, both Republicans and the evil Democrats are against him. Why? Because Moore is a man of GAWD! Moore can quote scripture good about the righteous suffering the slings and arrows of ridicule when they stand up for god. Moore has gone on and on and on about how the US is circling the drain because "we kicked God out of our schools and our lives." (Psst! That's a GOOD thing, Roy!)

It's fascinating and nauseating to see all these good god-fearin' Christians sticking by the cradle-robbing Moore. A Republican pedophile is far preferable to any dirty Democrat, apparently. We know there is no depth to which they will not sink. No one is safe from their situational morality.

But, but, but, some cultures permit teenage brides as young as 12. (and we should emulate that?)

Oh, and how about that fool who compared Moore to a teenage Mary and adult Joseph, who produced Jesus? Hey, wasn't there something about an Immaculate Conception, or something?

I wonder how much bible-thumpers can get away with in this day and age?

Often, "god" is a bit of a subtext in politics but most don't wear it so brazenly. This election, well, you don't often get to watch a god vs. satan battle out in the open like this.

Embarrassing.

we atheists, agnostics and freethinkers are now the "good" and the Christians are "evil" (I'll put the Muslims in the evil category too)

Man made religion is evil.
The rest of us are fighting it.

(I don't put spirituality in the same category as religion, more of the free thinker designation.)

"good, God fearing Christian". I do not know about you but I feel slightly like, "I told you so..." and that is one reason why I have been an Atheist for over 40 years (same with my entire Atheist family). Praise the Lord and pass the salt I like to say at family dinners. We all smirk, especially if we have a guest who doesn't get the joke.

This kind of thing has been going on forever. A goodish proportion of "Good, God-fearing Christians" have always had adulterous affairs, stolen from their friends, neighbors, and business associates, beaten their wives and kids, got drunk and/or used drugs, molested children, etc. etc. etc. And, their co-religionists have always tended to defend them, long past the time it became indecent to do so. This is nothing new.

She says, "Sure."

Then he asks, "Would you have sex with me for twenty dollars?"

She gets offended and says, "What? You think I'm a hooker?"

He says, "We've already established that. Now we're just negotiating a price."

The point here is the religious right established exactly who they were by their unwavering support of Trump. They've crossed some sort of event horizon of depravity -- nothing they do can be a surprise anymore.

If Moore is “guilty as accused,” these people prefer a devil to a Democrat. That’s not about religious rigor, that’s ideological extremism on a Middle Eastern scale. That is a country-ruining worldview. There remains a possibility that Moore, like Trump, could win in spite of the controversy.

The “religious right” as an idea is dead. There are religious people, and many are on the right, but the idea of religiosity as an organizing principle for conservatives has passed. Trump helped kill it. This incarnation of conservatism has burned its cross and erected the golden calf of Trumpism in its place.

Trump is the right's new religion.

Strangely, I think this may ultimately go a good thing.
