Yay! Anti-atheist bigotry on HuffPo (again).

In this piece, Eli Verschleiser takes a rather unique spin to express his butthurt over religion in general being "under attack"

Every faith has its bad apples, as do atheists. But the fact is, no one goes around the world to fight AIDS or Ebola or dig wells or save children, or respond to disasters in the proud name of atheism. Faith-based groups do so routinely.

Implying, of course, that only the religious engage in charitable endeavors. Thankfully a couple of commenters have already taken him to task:

To make the claim that "no one goes around the world to fight AIDS or Ebola or dig wells or save children, or respond to disasters in the proud name of atheism" is very misleading.

There are many charitable organizations that are not affiliated with religion (Red Cross, Good Will, Doctors without Borders, etc). They simply don't refer to themselves as "atheist charities". Why would they? They do their good work without evangelizing.

Verschleiser continues his whine:

That's why those offended by the generic "Happy Holidays" and the Starbucks cups worry about a slippery slope.

Next thing you know Christmas is an optional work holiday, In God We Trust comes off the currency, the President is forbidden from using the Bible for his oath of office, and houses of worship lose their tax exempt status, all sacrificed on the altar of the ascendant Unaffiliated tribe.

Just what we need, more ammo for the idiots defending the faith in the war on Christmas/Christianity.

Eta: good point about non-religious/secular charities not referring to themselves as atheistic.

If someone does good works because they think it's making their faith look good to gain more followers, earning them a place in heaven, or keeping them out of hell, then they can go fuck themselves with their selfish motives!

You do good works because it helps relieve suffering and it's the compassionate thing to do for your fellow human beings.

Some of those ideas don't sound bad. Especially if they cut down on the number of Salvation Army bell-ringers around here, currently estimated at about 120,000.

If I want to be entertained by bell-ringing, I'll go watch "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

Oops, sorry DU Word Police. Of course I meant to say "The Differently Formed Person of Notre Dame."

Not to win a golden ticket to some sort of paradise for myself. Additionally, I never do anything, good or bad, out of fear of an all loving bible god who would send believers to eternal torture for eating shrimp or wearing polyester. Fucking morons.

When will it happen??? I am not holding my breath, but I can't wait!

And fuck this shit about atheists not doing charitable things. Besides that we don't advertise it all the time (although maybe we should to shut them up), there are a lot of non-religious charities. This is not the realm of religion only. And we donate to charities, often without worrying about whether they are faith-based or not...it is how much good they are doing and how much money is going directly to helping.

Cause it's like a list of things that really need to happen. The Christmas part is negotiable, I think we could go the other way and just have all major religious holidays as National days, because we need more not less.

Sounds like my kind of country.. are we there yet?

From a proud member of the unaffiliated tribe, and if we're ascendant, all the better.

Well, It didn't used to be on money and everything was fine... as it can be in general.

Also, several presidents have used other texts already to be sworn in.
