Sheriff's 'politically incorrect' sign draws strong reaction

In an effort to "stir people's belief and patriotism," Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley posted a new sign Tuesday morning outside of his department that says his county is politically incorrect, and if you have a problem with that, you can leave.

Paid for by Jolley, the sign reads: "WARNING: Harris County is politically incorrect. We say: Merry Christmas, God Bless America and In God We Trust. We salute our troops and our flag. If this offends you… LEAVE!"

Jolly said Tuesday he was tired of the silent majority becoming "more silent."

"It's time for the silent majority to stand up for our beliefs and not be ashamed," he said.

He's received overwhelming support for the sign that cost him $553, he said. He purchased it from D&S Sign Company on Linwood Boulevard in Columbus. Jolley said several citizens have wanted to post one on their property.

Well, this is an exciting new development! I didn't know a county sheriff had the authority to decide what all the citizens of the county should believe or think.

In fact, the Supreme Court had something to say about that once. Ironically, in a decision about Jehovah's Witnesses refusing to salute the flag:

If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein. - Justice Robert Jackson, West Virginia State Board of Education v. "I'm humbled by all of the support," the sheriff said. "Surprised and humbled by it. Maybe the silent majority isn't going to be silent anymore."

Jolley said he has approximately 75 employees in his office. When asked how those who perhaps aren't Christians may feel, Jolley said "they're more than welcome to worship whatever God they choose fit."

"For me and mine, we worship Jesus Christ."

As for what he hopes to achieve with the sign, Jolly said, "Coming up on Thanksgiving, maybe somebody will be thankful for something we have. …"

Jolley has been the sheriff of Harris County for six terms.

He did finish both years of a two-year law program at Albany Law School. But the school refused to give him a degree because he was under 21 years old when he completed the program.

8. That's amazing.

A 2 year law program? I wonder how they did that. My dad went to law school after The Big One on the GI Bill, and then you had to have 60 semester hours of college, and law school was 90 hours. You graduated with an LLB, a Bachelor of Laws.

Then in the 1960s before I went, they changed it to requiring a bachelor's degree for admission, but law school still is 90 semester hours. And now you get a higher degree, now it's a Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence in English. They call it a three year program, but I had to work and took 5 years. It was about three times harder than college and most of college wasn't that hard for me.

Sometime before I went to law school, they changed the law. There were some people that would study under a lawyer, and not take formal classes. They called that "reading for the bar". I don't think anywhere in the U.S. does that any more. I could be wrong.

9. California, oddly enough.

It has a Law Office Study Program, sort of like the old apprenticeship/reading for the bar programs. Thought I remembered hearing about that because I lived there for so long:

Other states may have something similar, but I'm not sure either.

The Comments on the article I linked were...entertaining. My favorite was the guy who volunteered "an army of 10.000 armed patriots" to guard the Holy Sign and make sure nobody took it down.

I just wish the patriots would push that a little farther and start a real armed revolt. Can't think of many things funnier than 10,000 grit-stuffed goobers waddling into battle with the real U.S. military.

6. The sign is saying atheists can't be patriotic.

Notice the weasily conflation:

1- We say: Merry Christmas, God Bless America and In God We Trust.
2- We salute our troops and our flag.

We do 1 and 2, implied:1 and 2 go together.
-> if you don't do 1/, then you don't do 2/
Conclusion: if you don't say in God we trust, you don't salute the flag and troops.

I always marvel at the blatant dishonesty believers feel entitled to to defend their faith.

Yeah.... but they obviously don't mean it. They don't want everyone to have a merry Christmas since you can just fuck off if you disagree with them. And "god bless America" is a command made to a deity....who can do it or not. And they don't trust in god, because they have a sheriff in case god doesn't stop the bad guys.
