First up from the God Machine this week is a closer look at the religious right movement’s reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality – which can roughly be described as this generation of the movement’s worst nightmare.

To put it mildly, the religious right isn’t altogether pleased. Right Wing Watch pulled together a collection of reactions yesterday from some of the movement’s more notable groups and leaders, all of whom are apoplectic. But only one religious right figure compared the ruling to 9/11 and Pearl Harbor – and then kept going.
Following the Supreme Court ruling striking down state bans on gay marriage this morning, American Family Radio’s Bryan Fischer had a bit of a meltdown on Twitter, which he subsequently cobbled together into a column that he then read on his radio program this afternoon.

In the span of two minutes, he managed to compare the ruling to 9/11, slavery, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Sodom and Gomorrah.

“From a moral standpoint, 6/26 is the new 9/11,” Fischer declared, “because it was on this day that five justices of the United States Supreme Court became moral jihadists. They became rainbow jihadists and they blasted the twin pillars of truth and righteousness into rubble. And they did this by imposing sodomy-based marriage on the United States through an act of judicial tyranny.”
Fischer quite literally referred to June 26, 2015 as “a date which will live in infamy. On this day, the United States became Sodom and Gomorrah.”

1) Nothing in any marriage requires sodomy. (Marriages are based on the type of sex they are gonna have or not have?)
2) Straight marriages also indulge in sodomy

4. as a member of AU

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, the Rev. Barry Lynn (AU Executive Director), is a voice I seek out when the religious crazies are running amok.

One of the things noted in this snip from AU is a reminder that churches do not have to provide weddings for same-sex couples. Some howling fundies think churches will be FORCED to marry duh GAZE. Nuh-uh.

Religious Right Groups Will Seek To Undermine Historic Ruling, Asserts Church-State Watchdog

Americans United for Separation of Church and State welcomes today’s Supreme Court ruling extending marriage equality nationwide but cautions that it will spark a sharp backlash from the Religious Right. The high court ruled 5-4 that it is unconstitutional for states to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying. States will also be required to recognize all legal marriage licenses issued by other states, including those given to gay couples.

“Today love and the Constitution triumphed over bigotry and religious extremism,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director. “That’s a great step, but no one should expect the Religious Right and its political allies to give up. They are already working to throw up as many roadblocks as possible to prevent LGBT Americans from claiming their hard-won rights.”

Lynn said the focus will now shift to proposals to give for-profit business and even government employees a “religious freedom” right to refuse services to same-sex couples. Measures like this have already passed in some states and are pending in others. Some Religious Right groups, Lynn noted, have vowed to defy the ruling.

“The high court did the right thing, but that doesn’t mean we’ve heard the last word on this issue,” Lynn said. “In fact, this ruling will create a new front in the ‘culture war’ as aggressive Religious Right groups seek new ways to stop the spread of equality.”

Lynn noted that nothing in the Obergefell v. Hodges decision affects the rights of houses of worship. The separation of church and state means that churches can’t be forced to provide weddings for same-sex couples.

5. ...and what if they just blow each other?

are there gay couples like that? I know several gays but never thought to ask any of them that question.

But, yeah, a lot of preachers are pretty obsessed with anal sex. It's so good they just can't help themselves.

It feels so good, it must be bad!! Poor fundies, so wracked with guilt.

6. Their definition of sodomy takes a wide stance

(See What I Did There in the title? If not, just Google "Larry Craig.&quot

To some Fundies, "sodomy" is any sex act that doesn't lead to pregnancy and procreation. More liberal Fundies just define it as "any sex act of which I do not personally approve."

Important Scientific Research Note: this is not restricted to Xian Fundies. I remember an interview with Souad Saleh - an Egyptian woman who's a college professor and expert in sharia law. Saleh is generally considered a Muslim liberal, mostly because she's an advocate for women's rights in Islam.

Yet even Saleh says Islam bans "dirty" sex acts. IIRC, her two examples of that were sex during the menstrual period and anal sex.

Having a 9-yr-old wife, on the other hand...
