Things like this give me a glimmer of hope ...
Confidence in organized religion has been in a downward spiral since at least the 1970s. Its still more popular than Congress, but thats not saying much.
According to a recent Gallup poll, confidence in organized religion reached an all-time low of 42 percent this year. The decline became noticeably steep in the 80s, with the biggest drop off in the early 2000s, when news of the Catholic Churchs widespread child rape and cover up broke, according to Gallup. A dramatic 15 percentage point drop from 60 to 45 can be seen on Gallups graph around the years 2001 and 2002.
The consequence?
The church and organized religion is losing its footing as a pillar of moral leadership in the nations culture, according to Gallup. It once was one of the most reliable points of public confidence, but now has fallen below the military, small business and the police. Congress, the media and the medical industry are among the institutions with lower rankings.

(468 posts)It is one of the most unethical groups out there in terms of patents. Oh this drug's patent is almost up? Make a new one with a slightly different formula for the same purpose and stop making the old one. Profits maintained!
There are other issues but it all can be solved with socialized medicine like we should have had years ago.

(9,693 posts)A lot of people of faith turn to their church when shit like this happens, even or maybe especially when something like this happens in a church. They will be more resolved than ever to attend their church to show solidarity.
I just wonder how much longer people will beseech a being that never shows up for anything, or anyone, anytime?
People show up. God doesn't. Hey, these people are not God, these people are people.
Some day they will realize they made up their gods, but they just might decide to keep it because they like it so much.

(18,219 posts)That was my first step toward atheism---loss of confidence in established religion. It was downhill from there.

Nobody else did and they're finally realizing that their bread cast upon the waters just got soggy and sank.
