Advice for Cardinal Pell: When youre talking about coverups of child rape, its best to stick with apologizing
MARY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS
...
But though Pell says he never directly covered up abuse and that he is committed to working to make improvements, Pells track record tells a different story. Twenty years ago, Pell appeared in court with his colleague Father Gerald Francis Ridsdale while Ridsdale was on trial for sexual abuse. Ridsdale was eventually convicted of molesting and raping 40 children over a 26-year period. At the inquiry this week, Cardinal Pell defended his support for Ridsdale, saying, At that stage nobody knew well, I certainly didnt what proved to be the full extent of his infamous career. I did know that there was a very significant number of charges but I had no idea about all the other things that would unfold. During the same period, Pell continued to authorize payment of a frugal allowance to Father Ronald Pickering after Pickering fled to England in the wake of sex abuse allegations and refused to cooperate with authorities. It was Pells successor who stopped the payments and launched an investigation.
...
And although, when he spoke on Monday, Pell said, I am fully apologetic and absolutely sorry, his degree of not-getting-it is still pretty staggering. Pell insisted, I dont believe we have a moral obligation to increase the settlement amounts for sex abuse victims. And in an epic case of poor timing, he railed against 25 years of hostility from the press and noted that the Australian government was not active earlier in pursuing sexual abuse cases. He also, outrageously, declared, Ive sometimes said, if wed been gossips which we werent and we had talked to one another about the problems that were there we would have realised earlier just how widespread this awful business was.
Heres a hint: When youre talking about systematic coverups of child rape, its best to stick with apologizing. Its good to remember that you can admit youve made mistakes without making the ludicrous, easily refuted claim that youve always been on the side of the victims, or humble bragging that the real problem is that you werent gossips. Doing the morally and legally responsible thing of acting when someone is abusing children is not, by the way, gossip. And you want to consider, while youre explaining yourself to the world, that you still have much soul searching yet to do. Because right now, Pell remains a harrowing example of the evil of complacency.
Perhaps the most telling moment of Pells appearance wasnt anything he said about the crimes on his colleagues or the litigation of victims. Instead it was when, on Monday, the deputy chairman of the committee, Frank McGuire, asked Pell point-blank, Were you guilty of willful blindness? And the man of God answered him confidently, I certainly wasnt.

'Shame on the government, they should have caught us sooner' is what that amounts to.

(3,660 posts)IF you believe abortion kills a distinct human being and even a supposed soul, then it is murder, and surely murder is worse than sexual abuse in any jurisdiction or legal code.
Of course that's so much equine effluent, but it is the inescapable conclusion of equating the fetus with a fully personal, independent essence, which is the official teaching of the RCC, Catechism 2270-71.
Cafeteria Catholics may genuinely disagree with the official tenets of their faith, or pretend to to spare defending the indefensible, but that's pretty much verboten for clergy.

This fucker has no idea what morality means. It wouldn't surprise me if he has his own sordid history of child molestation.

(95,337 posts)I swear it's lamest reply to an arguement out there ever.
I replied back to one of them with 'That's the best you got?' and then went on about how it's disgusting any of these right-wing fundies call themselves 'Pro-life' when they could care less after the fetus is born since they would allow a child to starve, deny healthcare, education, housing and all that other stuff.

(9,693 posts)Enabling a woman to take control of her reproductive system is FAR FAR worse than traumatizing an innocent child, perhaps for life, and then slinking away unmolested, so to speak.
That might work in Kansas, but we're not in Kansas anymore.

After all, the Lord is a much higher authority than any government.

I mean, I know I'm influential and shit, but if I can turn an election by saying "fuck the RCC", I'm like Wonder Woman.
Fuck the RCC.
