Related: About this forumLess than 40% of would-be MPs claim a belief in God (UK)
A survey carried out by Whitehouse Consultancy has found that 33% of parliamentary candidates contesting marginal seats describe themselves as atheists.
Just 37% said they believe in God, and 42% of the 225 parliamentary candidates who responded to the survey said they had no religious affiliation.
Only 16% of respondents were members of the Church of England, closely followed by 12% of prospective parliamentary candidates who identified with the Roman Catholic Church.
2% of respondents said they were Jewish; likewise 2% of PPCs each said they were Buddhist and Muslim.

We've got a lot of catching up to do. It'll take years, if not decades.

(50,566 posts)3. Sometimes I think that, but, on the other hand,
look how quickly public opinion on gay marriage turned around. There might be a tipping point in the next decade or so where enough people either lose their "faith," never get any (e.g. young people), or know enough atheist/agnostics that they get more tolerant. Who knows, though. This country seems to have its head up its ass on a lot of things.

That statement says it all. I wish I could be as optimistic as you about how long it will take, but I am not seeing any reason to think we will get there soon.
