Nearly 100 Forced Laborers Buried More Than A Century Ago Recovered From School Grounds

Construction crews have unearthed the graves of 95 people thought to be black prisoners forced into labor more than a century ago.

The long-forgotten cemetery was first discovered in April after the Fort Bend Independent School District broke ground for a new educational center. Since archaeologists began work in mid-June, 48 individuals have been exhumed. Of those, analyses have been completed on more than 20. Experts with the Texas Historical Commission believe the bodies belong to black convicts forced into labor camps after the abolishment of slavery.

“All of [the remains] are male, except for one female of the ones that have been analyzed so far,” said onsite bioarchaeologists Dr Catrina Whitley in a statement. “They’re ranging from 5 feet, 2 inches to 6 feet, 2 inches in height, and anywhere from 14 years of age to 50 to 70 years of age.”

Scientists say of the bodies unearthed, some could have been former slaves. All look to be of muscular build with some “misshapen bones” that suggests a life of hard labor and repetitive movements. Buried 0.6 to 1.5 meters (2 to 5 feet) beneath the surface, the discovery could help historians paint a better picture of what life looked like at this time.

to bet that there probably hundreds if not thousands of these graves with many, many bodies of POC, AA men, women and children predominantly. It was so very easy to pick up ex-slaves and other free AA people for 'vagrancy', which was the usual crime of these type 'forced labourers. Freed from slavery and with no restitution(the 40 acres and a mule lie)many wandered. Couldn't get jobs because no whites would help them and then Jim Crow segregation laws were sown firmly into the racist threads of the so-called 'ameriKKKan quilt. No African ex-slave could hide for long.

It saddens me to no end that an AA man, women or child still has to worry about the racist white and the continuing commentary on the hypocritical nature of ameriKKKa and it's sad and untrue lies and illusion(s) of equality and freedom that are still used to cover up continuing AA genocide. And now we have a potus liar and chief and his propaganda arm, FOX NEWS, along with his deplorable crew, itching to take over this country.

I am betting my life here also, that this is the future of many a free American of colour if this fascist refuses to relinquish power and calls on his followers to start shooting after the November mid-terms.

Melting Pot boiling over because no one is minding the stove. We are the only hope for an America free of fascist leadership.

What life entailed at that time of law driven segregation and open genocide in ameriKKKa for the 'freed' African slave? Misery and murder at the hands of ANY white with a whim to kill a n****r.

Thank you for providing another at look at this proof of ameriKKKan hypocrisy and lies.

You have read or know about the book, 'Slavery by Another Name, right?
