After the Bondi terror attack, the erasure of its Jewish victims

(THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP)

A phenomenon no less disgusting than it is entirely unsurprising has followed the shooting attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's Bondi beach on Sunday: the erasure of its Jewish victims.

Post after post, story after story, my social media feed – from friends I grew up with in Australia, local influencers, major consumer brands – has been flooded with messages like "Our hearts are with everyone affected by the tragic events at Bondi," "So deeply saddened by the tragedy in Bondi," and "Violence has no place here, I love you Bondi."

They were accompanied by calls for "Solidarity with the Jewish community, for the Muslim and Arab communities, for all of us who share a common humanity." Because, apparently, it's obligatory to redistribute evenly the Jewish dead across the moral ledger.

A friend in Sydney described how their boss sent around a company-wide email reflecting on the tragedy in Bondi, without mentioning the word "Jewish" even once. Another friend shared a post stating that the essence of the Bondi terrorist attack was that "violence, whether driven by antisemitism, racism, Islamophobia or any other form of bigotry must be stopped."

Then there was the friend who dared to call out a post on Instagram which didn't identify the shooting as an antisemitic attack. She was met with a torrent of replies insisting that "No, it was an attack against Zios," that it targeted "Zio terrorists who murdered Palestinian children in Gaza," that it was motivated by "Anti-genocide antizionism," and, in one breathtaking moment of mask-off clarity, that there was "No such thing as antisemitism."

We have to state the obvious. The Bondi attack was driven by antisemitism. And it targeted, directly, the Jewish community.

On a personal note, I want to share that I might be away from the group for a few days because of a procedure I'm having tomorrow.
