A quick recap of the dramatic events in Israel tonight: PM Netanyahu fired the Minister of Defense for opposing the judicial overhaul and warning that it seriously jeopardizes Israel's security. In response, spontaneous demonstrations have erupted across the country.
Many politicians from the Netanyahu block are abandoning ship and calling for a halt to the judicial coup d'etat. The leader of the powerful ultra-orthodox party, Shas, Arie Deri, is also reportedly joining these calls. If these MKs do not make a U-turn, Netanyahu will not have the votes to pass his so-called reform. I am currently on the Ayalon, Tel Aviv's main highway, where tens of thousands of people have gathered. Similar demonstrations are taking place all across the country.
The country's major union is about to declare a national strike, and universities have already declared a strike for tomorrow. Right now, it seems Netanyahu has overplayed his hand and injured the chances of his own reform to pass the Knesset. However, the night is still young.

Ayalon highway in Tel Aviv, right now. Truly revolutionary scenes.
For the first time in history, Israel's main union, as well as leaders from the banks and the entire business sector, are about to declare a general strike demanding that the government stop the judicial coup. Employers have committed to paying full wages to workers.
My Rabbi is over there now with a tour group...I hope they are all safe.
