★ "If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of star dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the worlds list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in the world, in all the ages; and has done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it.
The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. ALL THINGS ARE MORTAL BUT THE JEW; ALL OTHER FORCES PASS, BUT HE REMAINS. What is the secret of his immortality? - Mark Twain
★ (This article was written in 1899 when anti-Semitism was widespread in the United States. Large companies did not hire Jews, Universities either didn't admit Jews or limited their numbers with strict quotas. "Respectable" people like Ford and Edison expressed their anti-Jewish feelings openly. Mark Twain had an answer for them:

(3,064 posts)are truly remarkable. The sciences, the arts, everything Twain mentioned the Jews have had quite an impact on, even discounting their small numbers.
The US is most fortunate to have so many citizens of Jewish ethnicity.
Bravo, Mr. Twain.
OK, they have little effect in the NBA as players but I'll overlook that.
I'm as W(?)ASP as they come, 99.9% Northwestern European with .1% unaccounted for( according to 23 and Me) but I applaud what these exceptionally talented people have accomplished.
Oh yeah, the question mark at the end of the W in WASP. Any Anglo Saxon Protestant is white. I've always felt the W unnecessary. Unless they're orange, anyway.

(136,110 posts)On Nov. 1, 1946, one year after the end of World War II, the New York Knickerbockers and Toronto Huskies tipped off at Maple Leaf Gardens. Ossie Schectman, a Queens native born to Jewish immigrants from Russia, scored the first official basket of the BAA, as the NBA was known at the time. Schectman only played one season, but he started a Jewish legacy that is still present today.
After Schectman, it continued with stars including Dolph Schayes, Art Heyman and Ernie Grunfeld. On Hanukkah, we celebrate the eight greatest Jewish players to pick up an NBA basketball.

(3,064 posts)players of note but they don't dominate the game like African Americans do. No other ethnic group has either, for that matter, including us ASPs.
It was a joke and I'm sure you took it as that.

(3,064 posts)If arthritis in his left arm hadn't cut his career short he'd be the GOAT, no doubt.
He had a five year period with the Dodgers from
1962 to 1966 that I doubt will ever be equaled in baseball.
I've read that after his first unremarkable years with the Dodgers someone, I don't remember who, simply told him to lighten up a little and enjoy what he was doing a little more.
That was after the '61 season. And the next five years are baseball history.
Sandy's 85 y.o. now and lives in Vero Beach, Florida. And he still looks pretty darn good. Tanned and slender.
