Callista Gingrich confirmed as US Ambassador to the Vatican. (As seen on C-Span)
By a vote of 70-23, Callista Gingrich was confirmed by the US Senate as the next US Ambassador to the Vatican.
A number of Democratic Senators voted with Republicans in the affirmative.

(5,196 posts)I'm wondering if her husband Newt will accompany her to her mission, and, if so, is that a good thing or a bad thing.
It may be a good thing to have him out of the way and off the networks, and I doubt he can do much damage, though I may be wrong and he might be a trouble-maker.
I'm not concerned, as some people are, that Callista's and Newt's relationship occurred while Newt was still married to his second wife, because, after all, we do believe in forgiveness and redemption of sinners, now don't we?
Perhaps something good will come of this turn of events.

(17,137 posts)Let me say up front that Newt Gingrich does and says horrible things, and of course the current Mrs. Gingrich carried on with him during his second marriage. But Jackie Battley, the first Mrs. Gingrich, was not terminally ill when he sought to divorce her.

Jackie Battley Gingrich lived until 2013.
As for the current ambassador to the Vatican, I'm all for forgiveness and redemption, but it's very hard to see this as anything other than considerable slack being cut for people with the right connections. Your average Catholic might get a bit more pushback if involved in a very public scandal.
And surely there must be many Catholic Republicans who possess the right experience and character for the ambassadorship. One of the complaints about Callista Gingrich was that she wasn't qualified to be an ambassador.
