Need help locating newly adopted kitty (definitely still inside house)

Last Monday, I adopted a two year old female cat from the local animal shelter. As some of you know, I had to have my last kitty put down at the ripe old age of 20 when she was in liver and kidney failure.
This new kitty adores me and is by my side constantly.

I thought that maybe she needed a playmate so I answered an ad for a 1 yr old kitty that was not working out for the family. I brought her home yesterday afternoon and set her up in the half bath with a separate litter box, food and water. She escaped from there and is somewhere in my house. She managed to get behind the water heater in a rather inaccessible area, but I can't see her there any longer. There is duct work right by that and I don't know if she could get into that and under my house or what.

I have run the can-opener in the rooms she could be in, but no response. I even looked under the house and heard nothing. Under the house is all brick and if she did get into the crawl space, there would be no escape unless I opened the door.

All bedrooms were blocked off already except for my own, and I have already checked mine thoroughly (twice) and then shut the door.

I have not been outside today or yesterday after coming home, so I am positive she has not gotten out.

There is a family room, living room, dining area (no place to hide), kitchen, pantry (I have checked) and half bath (washer and dryer are here and folding doors were shut), plus that small closet with the water heater.

I am getting very concerned she might be stuck somewhere.
Does anyone get a sense of where she might be? The other kitty is helping me look, but she can't find her either.

The first thing that came to mind was that she was tucked waaaay back in a corner of a closet.

GO through the house and bang the lid of the cat food can - then stop and listen. Go to all floors - even the darkest crannies.

I had a cat go into the heating duct once but he came out when he was hungry.

Good luck and let us know what happened.

6. I found her!

I remembered the former kitty mom had called her by shaking a cup with kibble in it, so I decided to try it. When her furry little head peaked above the stairs in the family room, I ran to see where she went and I found her by the fireplace. She then tried to go behind my couch even though I had stuffed pillows (with flowers) blocking her way.

I still don't know where her hiding place was, but she is in a room all by herself with the food, water and litter box. I am getting ready to take her some yummy soft food and a couple of treats.

I am so relieved she is not in a heating duct or in trouble anywhere.

Thanks for everyone's help!

At the bottom-side of any upholstered pieces. Sometimes, even a small hole or loose covering will give them enough space to crawl up inside of the furniture.

Glad to hear it.

When we first moved into our current house, which is very (VERY) old, I lost one of our cats. But I didn't know it at the time. She found a hole (a cold-air return with a ripped screen) down to the basement, and she followed the interesting smells. I only knew she was where she shouldn't be when I heard squeaking (she can't meow--just makes a noise like "aiee?" ) coming from the WRONG side of the basement door! I opened the door and there she was, completely covered in cobwebs, and very, VERY happy.

Silly kittehs. They get into all sorts of places they shouldn't.

I would be very happy, too, if you rescued me after being covered in cobwebs!

cat/dog/walking fish - you know how dreams are.

It was hiding under a chair like I described in my above post. Thought I'd throw it out there

not getting any hits per se but when the lil darling appears, try this product: http://www.feliway.com/us

She'll be a calmer and more relaxed kitty.
